Persian Learner - Features

• Learning begins with basic conversations

  No matter how easy it is to learn a language, starting with an unknown and complicated writing system is quite boring and counter intuitive. Humans begin learning their mother tongue by listening and learning basic conversational skills. Once the basic sound system is acquired, they are ready to develop literacy skills. Although, the book introduces the reading and writing systems in the second unit and basic listening and speaking skills advance faster, the four skills are quickly aligned and integrated.



• Both written and spoken styles are taught

  There is a minor variation between written and spoken forms of Persian. This book teaches you both forms from the beginning. Educated native speakers from the city of Tehran, who speak what is considered to be the standard variation, have recorded the dialogues. Words in Persian spoken form have been enclosed in parenthesis. You can also find audio files featuring the written styles for some of the reading passages on the website.



• Language skills have been integrated with cultural learning

  No lengthy English explanation of cultural components have been provided in the book. Instead, the thematic content integrates culture with other important language skills.



• Grammar is taught both implicitly and explicitly

  The lessons focus on form to emphasize grammatical structures in the content. The students are introduced to the grammar in an authentic context implicitly. Thus, their language processors are given the opportunity to figure out the rules subconsciously. Then the rule is given explicitly, and more exercises are provided to help internalize it.



• Diacritics disappear gradually

  Diacritics (the three short vowels) have been used in the book sporadically to facilitate the pronunciation of new vocabulary. Because they are not written in ordinary Persian texts, they will gradually disappear to increase reading speed.



• Performance-based units gradually spiral up to task-based

  The order of the units is based on the difficulty of language functions using level-appropriate performance descriptors. The order of activities in a unit is also sequenced based on the complexity of tasks. Later units gradually spiral up to task-based materials. Thus, they become more holistic by integrating several language functions and using authentic real-life materials.



• Persian Learners' Dictionary an integral part of the series

  This book is supplemented by an online elementary learner's dictionary, which is also available as an app for smart phones. The dictionary features equivalents in English, pronunciation, pictures, real examples in both written and spoken styles and grammatical categories. Students are expected to practice new vocabulary using the online dictionary.



• Appendices contain lexicon and grammar tables

  The lexicon at the end of each book contains all new words in alphabetical order. There is also a short appendix with useful tables of basic grammatical structures.



• Well-organized units that fit to any semester-long language program

  Each book contains more than enough materials and class exercises to cover a semester long language program.



• Instructors' guide and grammar reference supplement the series

  Persian Learner series come with an instructors' guide and a basic grammar reference textbook. The guide direct an instructor how to pursue the suggested curriculum in details with pictures and real classroom examples.



• Textbooks have high quality prints and are NOT bulky

  Careful design resulted in light, sturdy and high quality textbooks proudly made in the U.S.A. Students are able to write on their textbooks with a soft pencil and erase it without leaving stains. Papers are non-reflective to lessen the burden on eyes. All exercises and assignments have enough space to write on.



• Homework assignments have been embedded in the book

  There is no separate and confusing workbook. All homework assignments have been embedded in the book in designated pages that are color coded in gray. However, the homwwork pages are also available separately in the DVD (in PDF format). Students can purchase the DVD and print the homework pages if they are required to hand them in the class.



• Subsidized and reasonably priced

  Persian Learner series have been generously supported by a grant from the Farhang Foundation & USC. The current price of each volume at $54.99 is one-fifth of its production costs. Each textbook has about 220 colorful pages with more than 1000 pictures, and high quality audio/video materials. This project has taken eight years to be completed.



• Used large elegant fonts and enough space for novice writers

  Persian Learner series have been field-tested in real classrooms not only to check learning outcomes but also to check readability and writability factors. Student feedback were collected and necessary improvements were made accordingly. More constructive feedback are welcome.
